Description

A delicious and moist black forest cake made with layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream, and cherries.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 jar (24 oz) Morello cherries
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • Chocolate shavings for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in boiling water until combined. The batter will be thin.
  5. Pour batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, slice each cake in half horizontally to create four layers.
  8. Drain cherries and reserve juice. Place cherries in a bowl.
  9. In a separate bowl, whip heavy cream and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  10. On a serving plate, place one layer of cake. Drizzle with cherry juice and spread with whipped cream. Add a layer of cherries.
  11. Repeat for the next two layers. Place the final layer on top.
  12. Frost the top and sides of the cake with remaining whipped cream.
  13. Top with chocolate shavings and additional cherries if desired.
  14. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature before starting.
  • Do not skip the cooling step; it helps the cake set properly.
  • Use a serrated knife for even cake layers.
  • Feel free to adjust the sweetness of the whipped cream to your taste.
